Australian Embassy Bombed

CNN

This is going to be bad. The terrorists behind this don't mind if they kill Indonesian or even other Muslims. Their aim is to destabilize Asian states to replace them with Islamic theocracies.

I also believe that this has little to do with Australia's involvement in the Iraq war, though that has raised Australia's profile as a terrorist target.

I also have little doubt that the Government will try to score political points off of this attack.

How exactly do you conduct a war on a noun? Conduct airstrikes against dictionary publishers?

"It's time to take out Oxford, Mr. President"

In any case, the "War on Terror" is not going to work. It only creates more hate in the Muslim world, providing new recruits for terrorist groups who would otherwise not be joining the terrorist cause.

You can't defeat the symptoms of terrorism without defeating the causes.

The problem is that there are a lot of poor, angry Muslims who have been hurt by the United States: a lot of people were better off under Saddam than they are under American occupation. A lot of people hate the US for helping the Saudi monarchy. A lot of people just hate the US for the Iraqi invasion. A lot of people hate the US because your government is willing to back its oil corporations up... with military action.

And may I quote Yoda:

"Fear... leads to anger... Anger... leads to hate... Hate leads (to Terrorism)"

That's true... and what does the world fear? America. America is strong, powerful, and apparently willing to use that power to promote its own well-being. The American invasion hasn't brought democracy to Afghanistan and Iraq... it's brought war and chaos. Even if the real goal was bringing democracy and an end to oppression, why don't you go and bring democracy to Somalia? Or the Sudan?

That was a rant and a half... I admit it may not have been entirely coherent or accurate. And by the way... I like Americans. I have American friends. Democracy is a great thing (by the way, it was invented by the Greeks). It's just that your Administration is screwed up.

But it is possible that what replaces America could be worse. As I see it, there are 3 possibilities for a new superpower: Europe, China and India.

India, the largest democracy on Earth, still has enormous problems. Pakistan always stands as a threat, and poverty is massive. India is slowly modernizing, but not all gain in this.

Europe is disrupted by internal bickering and is not really united enough to become a superpower, at least not one that can throw its weight around. Europe will become mighty economically, but it is not a might that is easily used.

China is perhaps the most united of the three, but it is united under a falsehood. China is far from communist, more like a fascist dictatorship than a communist nation. But, China is strong and perhaps has the best chance of become a superpower, if it can defuse the Taiwan crisis peacefully.

However bad America is, "Communist" China would be worse.
