The Brick Testament

The Brick Testament

The Bible(tm): Now in convenient brick form.

Perhaps one should not follow the bible alone. Most "good Christians" don't. If they eat pork, they aren't following the bible.

There's good stuff in there, but the bible isn't all good.

El Amigo Solo,

Something that you have to realize about the Bible is that it is in two testaments. The New Testament (mainly the parts after Jesus' crucifixion) is what most accurately prescribes Christian life. The Old Testament was based before Christ was crucified, and thus the rules were somewhat different. I can provide a good explanation for this, but it could end up rather lengthy. A good starting place for understanding such things as prescriptions for animal sacrifices(in the OT) would be understanding the covenant that God had with Abraham. These things are no longer needed because Christ provided a sacrifice to cover all sins, the ultimate sacrifice, so to speak.

I can explain it further if you need me to.

That would explain a lot, and explains why I've heard conflicting ideas about gayness and the bible. The passage about "lying with mankind" is in the old testament, and therefore forgiven by Christ. O'course, as an atheist, I've only read the Skeptic's Annotated Bible, and not all of it, either.

Perhaps I should stop arguing religon and get on with arguing politics. Apologies to insulting anyone's beliefs.

The truth about homosexuality is that it is still a sin. Christ came to add to God's covenant, not destroy it. Christ went ahead and sacrificed himself for our sins in advance, rather than having us provide sacrifices after our sins (as was done in the OT).

Homosexuality is still a sin, and God still hates it. However, God does not hate the homosexual, and as a Christian, it is my job to not hate the homosexual either.

Christ's sacrifice covers all sins, but it must be accepted. You see, God gave man a free will, and that includes the choice to sin (be a homosexual) and the choice to accept forgiveness. In other words, no one is going to heaven unless they accept Christ's sacrifice, whether they are gay or straight.

Homosexuality is still a sin, and the wages of sin is death. Christ's death paid for all sin, but we have to accept that forgiveness. If someone accepts Christ's sacrifice, and then continues in sin (i.e. homosexuality), then I believe he is still going to heaven, but on earth, his relationship with God will not ever be good until he gets out of sin. Still, I believe he is going to heaven.

As for the Skeptic's Annotated Bible, it sounds useless. The Koran and Book of Mormon blatantly contradict the Bible. The Bible is the most trustworthy source, even if one looks from a purely secular perspective. I would suggest you get a hold of a New King James Bible.

As for religion, don't stop arguing about it. And continue to be open-minded about it too. If you don't talk about religion, how will you ever learn? I think that if you understood Christianity better, it might not bother you so much.

Grace and peace to you,
Neo

Forgive me if I don't believe that the Bible is the be-all and end-all of moral statements. If you looked at the sight you would see all the incosistences and absurdities within the Bible.

One statement really rings true in the Bible: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Most religons have this statement somewhere in their dogma: few follow it.

You support banning gay marriage. Would you stand still and have someone ban straight marriage?

Well, it's my central point of morality.

So you agree that you can do whatever you want to other people?

See why I rely on my own sense of morality? Perhaps you don't. I'll tell you why. The Bible and Christianity is no super-source of morality. Ever heard of the crusades? The inquistion? The holocaust? Just a few pieces of what I would consider immoral action by Christians. What about abortion-clinic bombings? Gay-bashing?

But if I rely on my own sense of morality, I won't kill people or hurt them, because I wouldn't want them to kill or hurt me. You, on the other hand, seem to support stoning gays because your God supports it. Why not think for yourself?

I really just didn't understand that argument. It seemed like you missed every second or third word. Could you maybe post it again more legibly?

You say that you should fight to defend Christianity. I hate to break it to you, but fighting generally involves killing.

Hey I'm a friend of Joe's and I'm just wondering what the basis of your morality is. You mentioned the golden rule was the central part of it, but what is its foundation? Is it you, or do you accept the parts of the Bible you like?
